Książka w języku angielskim.
"Sometimes I whisper it over to myself: Murderess. Murderess. It rustles, like a taffeta skirt along the floor." Grace Marks. Female fiend? Femme fatale? Or weak and unwilling victim? Around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery. [goodreads.com]

It is the Eve of All Saints, 1880, and Teresa Mulqueen lies dying. Her family gathers round her, and beneath this sad scene another drama, no less poignant, unfolds. In this house of stillness and shadow, her daughter Agnes anxiously awaits the return of her sister Rose-Marie and brother-in-law Vincent. Agnes adores her sister, but secretly, passionately loves Vincent—and she knows their marriage is foundering. Ahead lies a terrible battle between her uncompromising religious faith and the intensity of her love. [goodreads.com]

Behind this rather prim title lies the hilarious fictional diary of a disaster-prone lady of the 1930s, and her attempts to keep her somewhat ramshackle household from falling into chaos: there’s her husband Robert, who, when he’s not snoozing behind The Times, does everything with grumbling recluctance; her gleefully troublesome children; and a succession of tricky sevants who invariably seem to gain the upper hand. And if her domestic trials are not enough, she must keep up appearances. Particularly with the maddeningly patronising Lady Boxe, whom our Provincial Lady eternally (and unsuccessfully) tries to compete with. [goodreads.com]

Childhood Interrupted / Kathleen O'Malley. - First published. - London : ViragoPress, 2005. - 244 strony ; 23 cm.
Książka w języku angielskim.
In 1950, Kathleen O'Malley and her two sisters were legally abducted from their mother. The rape of eight-year-old Kathleen by a neighbor triggered their removal. Kathleen's mother successfully prosecuted the man, but it was her daughters who received a much harsher sentence when they were committed to Mount Carmel Industrial School in County Westmeath, Ireland. It was run by the Sisters of Mercy order of nuns, who also ran the notorious Magdalene Homes. Kathleen and her sisters were subjected to beatings, humiliation, hard labor, and near-starvation, until they were finally permitted to leave at the age of 16. Childhood Interrupted is Kathleen's inspiring, profoundly affecting story. [goodreads.com]
